Does The Siegal Cookie Diet Really Work?

Obesity is nothing new here in America. Many individuals struggle throughout their lives just trying to lose a few pounds. If you are someone that has tried different weight loss programs and failed, it could just be a sign that your body needs something else. If you’ve been into dieting lately, you’ve probably heard of the cookie diet. Created by Dr. Sanford Siegal, the cookie diet consists of cookies and shakes that act as a meal replacements for people to use in place of normal food throughout the day. Dr. Sanford Siegal is the creator of the famous “Cookie Diet.” This medical doctor based his idea of losing weight on eating healthy cookies and shakes that replace ordinary meals. As a matter of fact, he bakes his cookies in his own special bakery! This cookie diet has a similar concept to that of the Slimfast Plan, consisting of 6 cookies per day and one healthy meal for dinner.

The Cookie Diet is so popular that even star clients are claiming that it really works. About 500,000 people are already following this diet. Dr. Siegal uses a proprietary protein amino acid and fiber in his cookies to suppress hunger between meals.

Make no mistake, just like every other diet there are pros and cons to this program. This diet restricts caloric intake to 800-1000 per day with meals consisting of only cookies, shakes, or both. While this may work for some people, having only cookies and shakes to curb your appetite may be quite difficult for others. You may be easily tempted to look for other food choices, which can add calories to your daily consumption. These kind of calorie restrictions make some diets just too difficult to follow.

Another drawback specifically to the cookie diet is that exercise is not encouraged and there are questions regarding the transition from cookies back to normal food after ones ideal weight is reached. There is a slight risk of gaining all the weight back after your start to eat normal food again. You can only maintain your weight as long as you maintain the diet. Research has shown that most dieters who get off their previous diet regimens regain all the weight they lost soon after — with 10 pounds or more extra.

There is no doubt this diet is not for everyone. Dr. Siegal stated that there may be certain conditions that keep dieters from losing weight normally. One of those conditions is called Hypothyroidism. Hypothyroidism is classified as a failure of the thyroid gland which causes the body’s metabolism to slow down not allowing for calories to be burned efficiently.

It also causes insulin sensitivity which instigates weight gain.  Dr. Siegal does not recommend the cookie diet for those who suffer from this condition.

It’s extremely important to check with a doctor before starting a diet that restricts calories like the Siegal Cookie Diet. It won’t be easy, but if you are determined to get your health under control you have a chance. Start with the basics, like a healthy diet and more exercise.
