When Janice was in high school, she had gained a reputation as a studious person who rarely, if ever, let her hair down by drinking with her buddies. She seemed nearly obsessed about “shining” academically so that she would be able to find a career that she not only liked but one that also gave her a degree of monetary security.

After much contemplation, in time she decided that she wanted to be an attorney. In order to reach this goal, nevertheless, she would first have to get four years of undergraduate education.

After Janice completed high school, she applied to and was accepted into a highly regarded program in economics. Her logic behind this decision was that this academic discipline would be good preparation for law school and wouldn’t be indistinguishable from the bulk of law school applicants who choose political science as their undergraduate minor or major.

After graduating with a 3.65 GPA at the undergrad level, she applied to and was accepted at an illustrious law school at one of the Big East universities.

She was pleased with her legal studies but every so often she was weighed down from all the work that had to be accomplished at law school. Not unlike her high school and undergraduate days, nevertheless, she made buddies effortlessly but almost never took part in social activities until the semester was finished.

Janice was the type of person who worked hard to reach her goal and then would take a few days off when she could. As is the case, however, a good number of the things she did between terms or during her summer vacations did not have much to do with drinking. It almost goes without saying that Janice was anything but a partygoer. Now that her finals for her second year in law school were finished and feeling overjoyed that she had done a super job on her tests, nonetheless, she felt like celebrating.

So Janice and a number of her friends from school went to a local bar and grill where they had a few drinks. As the hours passed, Janice continued to drink without having a care in the world about examinations or class the next day. As the evening advanced, Janice and her classmates continued to drink. As a matter of fact, she was having such a good time that she didn’t want the night to come to an end. It was almost like she was making up for lost time and attempting to compress a year’s worth of fun into a single evening. Such a “game plan,” in most instances, does not work. If truth be told, when Janice went to the powder room and threw up, her classmates started to get concerned about her wellbeing.

About thirty minutes later when Janice started to slur her speech, talk in a confused manner, and then pass out, however, her classmates promptly realized that they needed to call 911, the emergency number, and ask for medical assistance because they thought that Janice was exhibiting alcohol poisoning symptoms.

Once Janice was in the hospital, the lead emergency room physician corroborated what her classmates had speculated, that is to say, that Janice had far more alcohol than her body could metabolize and, consequently, she experienced an alcohol overdose.

After the emergency room treatment team pumped her stomach until no gastric contents were evident, Janice was transported to the recovery room. After staying roughly six hours in recovery, Janice was then placed in one of the regular hospital rooms. Fortunately, the worst part of her hospitalization was over and all of her vital signs were back to normal.

In response to Janice’s medical circumstances, her classmates thoughtfully telephoned her parents. Consequently, early the next morning, her Mom and Dad and her favorite pals went to the hospital to visit Janice and look into her medical condition.

Janice was attentive to the fact that she had narrowly escaped death and, consequently, was gratified to be alive. Her Mother and Father knew how intensely she worked at the university and how little she permitted herself to experience a social life. Nonetheless, they also knew that Janice needed to keep away from abusive drinking.

As a result, they suggested that down the road, whenever a drinking circumstance develops, that she always drink responsibly and in moderation. Janice was fine with this and swore to her Mother and Father and to her friends that she would never again drink in an abusive and excessive manner. As stated by Janice, “I never thought that I would become one of the alcohol abuse and alcoholism statistics in the local city newspaper. I now understand that abusive and hazardous drinking is not for me. I pledge that this will never happen again.”

Fortunately, Janice was not only “book smart” but she also had a lot of common sense. That is, she quickly comprehended that she had made a mistake and made up her mind that she would never make the same error again. Indeed, she now understood that she had involved herself in “binge drinking” and that even one instance of this kind of abusive drinking can end in a fatality.
